Slot Features Explained for Alberta Players

Editor: Updated

Slot features are the rules that change what happens during a game: wild substitutions, scatter triggers, free spins, multipliers, symbol replacements and collection sequences. For Alberta players, understanding a feature means identifying its trigger, scope, duration, cost and final award rather than relying on its name or animation.

This guide explains the main terms, uses worked examples and links to more detailed game categories. Publisher examples demonstrate particular mechanics; they are not a confirmed catalogue at every Alberta casino. The casino cards below compare account information separately from the rules of an individual game.

Six questions that explain a feature

What starts it?

Find the qualifying symbols, positions, counts or other condition. A trigger in one title need not apply to another.

What changes?

Identify whether the effect changes symbols, a reel, a value, a counter or the complete round.

How long does it last?

Read the number of attempts, reset events and ending conditions. Separate one paid round from its internal animations.

What does it cost?

Check the total stake and any separately approved purchase. A feature triggered during a round differs from buying entry.

How is it calculated?

Identify the paytable unit, multiplier scope and order of operations. Read what is added or replaced.

What is finally credited?

Use the settled total and account history. An intermediate subtotal may already be included in the final result.

Keep the answers attached to the full game name, publisher and selected mode. Similar artwork or a familiar feature label cannot fill a missing rule.

Jackpot City’s Alberta payment page lists different timeframes for Visa and the method labelled “Interac Online”. That label alone does not establish an Interac e-Transfer payout route. Compare the route available to your own account, including verification and any processing before a payment is released. The figures in this card are published payment information checked on October 30, 2026; they are not measured payout results.

Spin’s payment page distinguishes methods that support withdrawals from deposit-only methods. Its two-way section includes Apple Pay, but its specific FAQ names only Interac and Visa; confirm the Apple Pay payout route in the current cashier. That distinction matters more than the number of logos shown. Its published timeframes were checked on October 30, 2026; account checks and the receiving provider can affect completion.

Royal Vegas’s Alberta payment page gives a one-to-three-business-day timeframe for Visa and Interac. Its FAQ also describes a standard 24-hour pending period for review. These are published figures checked October 30, 2026. A listed payment method does not establish its availability, limits or eligibility for every player.

Betway appears in the AiGC registered-site directory checked on November 1, 2026. Alberta-specific payment timings were not verified in our October 30 operator check. General Canadian or Ontario help information is not used here as a substitute for Alberta account terms. Confirm the regional site and cashier before depositing.

Compare games and accounts separately. A payment range does not identify a slot’s return setting or feature price. Check the regional game lobby and its information panel for the exact title and mode.

Common feature terms at a glance

The terms below describe questions to investigate. They are useful starting points, but the help file supplies the actual conditions. Where a game combines several effects, follow their stated order rather than treating each label as an independent cash award.

Feature names and the rule that matters
Term Basic idea Read this detail
Wild Substitutes within qualifying combinations Exceptions, position and any extra effect
Scatter A symbol with its own award or trigger role Required count and permitted locations
Free spins A sequence awarded under the game’s rules Starting count, retriggers and mode changes
Cascade or reaction Symbols are replaced during a sequence Which symbols change and when the round ends
Multiplier Changes a defined value or award Scope, combination rule and order
Collector Gathers specified symbol values Eligible values and collection timing
Hold and respin Selected symbols remain during further attempts Counter allowance and reset event
Feature purchase Separately priced entry or option Full debit, selected mode and settlement rules

The base game, feature and paid round

The base game is the ordinary game from which a feature may start. Once triggered, a feature can use another layout, a different symbol set or a separate counter. Its activity can still form part of the sequence following one paid round.

That distinction matters for the session record. Ten animations are not necessarily ten purchases, and ten small awards are not necessarily ten profitable rounds. Read the actual debit and the final credit.

Suppose an invented 50-cent paid round produces a 20-cent base award and a 60-cent feature award. With no other charge, the combined credit is 80 cents and the net result is a 30-cent gain. Adding the combined 80 cents to its two components would count the same awards twice.

Our how-to-play guide covers the full sequence from checking a stake to reviewing the result. The slot-rules guide provides the wider reading checklist.

Wild symbols and their variations

A wild can substitute for symbols under the paytable’s rules. Begin with what it can replace and any exclusions. Then read whether it has another effect, such as covering more positions, remaining for later attempts or carrying a multiplier.

Terms such as expanding, sticky, walking and overlay need a duration and scope. An expanding effect might concern a reel or another defined area. A persistent effect needs an ending condition. The name alone does not establish that it lasts for an entire session.

NetEnt’s current Divine Fortune page gives a specific example: an Overlay Wild landing on an existing Wild activates its Wild on Wild feature, which expands to cover the reel. That publisher description should not be applied to every wild in every slot.

When a result contains several wilds, use the game’s win breakdown to see what they contributed. A wild animation is not automatically a separate award to add to the displayed combination. Check whether a symbol has already been included in the result before counting it again.

Scatters, bonus symbols and triggers

A scatter or bonus symbol can have a trigger role, a prize role or both. Read the number required, permitted positions and whether the symbols need to appear together. “Anywhere” wording, a reel restriction and an accumulated count describe different conditions.

Pragmatic Play’s Sweet Bonanza 1000 page describes at least four lollipop symbols triggering ten free spins. It separately describes eight or more matching fruit or candy symbols producing prizes and tumbles. Those are different qualifying conditions within one title.

Keep a paying-symbol threshold separate from a feature threshold. Counting eight ordinary matching symbols would not, by itself, establish that the lollipop condition was met. A sequel or related title can also use different triggers.

Where a game presents progress between rounds, find its persistence rules before assuming that symbols from an earlier round count toward the next. The help file should identify whether a count is simultaneous, accumulated within a feature or stored more broadly.

Free-spin features and retriggers

A free-spin feature is a sequence awarded under the game’s rules. It can change the symbol set, multiplier behaviour or other conditions compared with the base game. Read the starting count and what happens when additional qualifying symbols appear during that sequence.

Sweet Bonanza 1000’s publisher description says three or more lollipops during its bonus game add five free spins. That is a title-specific retrigger rule, not a standard allowance across the category.

Keep three arrangements distinct: a feature earned during a cash game, a demo using practice credits and an account promotion. The first belongs to the paytable, the second does not create cash winnings, and the third can have separate account terms. The word “free” on its own does not identify which arrangement is being described.

Also read how the feature’s stake is defined and when its total is credited. A counter that increases during play does not establish an additional deposit or a separate purchase.

Cascades, tumbles and reactions

These labels describe symbol replacement sequences, but the replacement rules vary. Establish which symbols disappear, how new symbols enter and what ends the sequence. A reaction can be part of the original paid round rather than another spin bought at the base stake.

In a hypothetical example, one 40-cent paid round produces cascade credits of 10 cents and 50 cents, followed by an ending result with no further award. With no additional charge, the combined credit is 60 cents and the round’s net result is a 20-cent gain.

Follow the full sequence before recording the result. A running total can already include earlier cascade awards. Its growth should not be added to the completed total a second time.

Our Megaways guide explains changing reel layouts and a publisher-specific reaction example. A changing layout and a cascade are separate mechanics; one label does not establish all the rules of the other.

Multipliers: scope and order matter

Before using a multiplier, identify the value it changes. It might apply to one symbol, one combination, a sequence subtotal or a final feature award. A multiplier attached to a position need not affect every prize on the screen.

Next read how multiple effects combine. In an invented example, adding 2× and 3× creates a 5× factor; applying that to a $2 qualifying subtotal produces $10. Multiplying 2× by 3× instead creates 6×, producing $12 from the same subtotal. Neither calculation can be chosen merely because it gives the larger result.

Sweet Bonanza 1000’s description says its bonus-game multipliers remain during tumbles, are added together and then apply to the total win. That is a specific combination rule. Another title may use a different scope or sequence.

Finally, check whether a displayed multiplier replaces an earlier value or acts in addition to it. Use the information panel and result breakdown to resolve the order. A screenshot showing two badges without their rules is incomplete evidence of the amount due.

Held symbols, collectors and respin counters

A held-symbol feature preserves selected symbols while more attempts take place. The held symbols may carry values or perform another function, such as collecting values elsewhere. Find the initial allowance and the exact event that resets the counter.

Our Hold and Win guide compares documented three-attempt and four-attempt examples. It also explains why the starting allowance may differ from the total number of attempts shown if qualifying events keep resetting the counter.

For collectors, read what is eligible, when it is gathered and whether the same values can be collected again. 3 Oaks Gaming’s More Magic Apple page describes a collector gathering Bonus and Bonus Gold symbol values, alongside an extra effects row. That product example illustrates why a collector needs its own rule rather than being treated as a simple printed prize.

A collector animation, an updated subtotal and a final credit can refer to related stages of one calculation. Record the settled amount once.

Meters, persistent effects and mystery reveals

A meter can represent different things, so begin with its stated function. Establish whether progress is stored, whether it belongs to a selected stake or mode, and what event changes or clears it. An illustration becoming fuller is not enough to establish a guaranteed trigger.

A persistent effect also needs a scope. Does it last for one feature, until a stated event, or across later rounds under defined conditions? Check what happens when the stake changes or the game closes. Progress in one title should not be assumed to carry into another.

Mystery symbols require a different check: when do they resolve, what can they reveal, and can that reveal activate another effect? Keep the unresolved symbol separate from a confirmed monetary award. The animation leading to a reveal is not a reason to enter a particular cash value in the session record.

Jackpots and maximum awards

A named jackpot, a progressive pool and a maximum win are separate descriptions. Read whether a prize is fixed, expressed as a stake multiple or funded through a growing pool. A feature can contain several named levels with different rules.

The progressive-jackpot guide explains eligibility, contributions, resets and ceilings. Its checklist applies when a game actually has a progressive component. The word “Mega” in a title or a large maximum multiplier does not establish one.

Check how a maximum-award condition interacts with an active sequence. Use the written ending and settlement rule rather than assuming a multiplier or continuing animation can override a stated limit.

Feature purchases and enhanced modes

A separately priced option needs a new cost check. Read the complete debit, what entry it provides and which game mode applies. The base stake used to quote a purchase multiplier is not necessarily the amount that will leave the balance.

For an invented example, a feature priced at seventy times a 40-cent base stake costs $28. If its final credit is $12, the net result of that purchase is a $16 loss. The number of attempts inside the feature does not change the purchase price or make the result profitable.

That example is arithmetic, not a price or expected award for a named release. Confirm any optional setting in the actual regional version. If a button offers a gamble or exchange, read what existing award or entitlement is at risk as well as what could be obtained.

Choose a stopping budget before considering the option. A purchase does not need to be completed simply because its information panel was opened or because the base-game session has already cost money.

Features, RTP and result variation

A feature’s frequency, average award and contribution to a game’s overall return are different measures. Frequent features do not establish frequent profit, and a long sequence can finish below its entry cost. The visual prominence of an effect does not reveal its share of the game’s mathematics.

The UK Gambling Commission’s public RTP explanation distinguishes a long-run average from the return in an individual session. We use that mathematical explanation without presenting UK requirements as Alberta operating rules.

Keep the return figure with the exact title and selected mode. A supplier’s product page can explain a design without establishing the setting currently supplied to a particular casino account. Where information is missing, leave it unconfirmed instead of copying another game’s percentage.

Read the high-RTP slots guide for return settings and the volatility guide for the uneven distribution of outcomes. Neither figure is a guarantee about the next feature.

A practical order for reading a new game

Start with the complete stake and basic paying combinations. Then read the symbols that change those combinations. Move on to feature triggers, duration, optional prices and settlement. This order helps keep an additional effect connected to the rule it modifies.

For your comparison record, write the full title, publisher, mode and date. Record the important rules in plain language rather than copying a list of marketing names. For example, “new qualifying symbols reset the counter” is more informative than a feature name without an explanation.

Link back to the Games hub when choosing related categories. Classic presentation, video graphics, Megaways and jackpots describe different aspects of a game; they need not be alternatives to every feature discussed here.

Practice credits and mobile controls

A demo can help you find the help panel and follow an example sequence without staking cash. Practice credits are not withdrawable, and a practice result does not establish the rules or entitlement of a later cash game. Our free-slots guide explains that distinction.

On a phone, check that the full price, feature counter and final result remain legible. Open the information panel and confirm that it closes without touching a paid control. Extra rows and long feature descriptions should be readable before a round is approved.

The mobile guide covers device access. A feature fitting the screen is a usability result, not evidence of a higher return or faster payment.

Account conditions after a game award

A feature credit and a withdrawal are different stages. Use the settled game result to understand the award, then read the account’s verification and payment conditions. A special animation does not identify which banking route is available.

The casino cards above preserve the differences in the payment information we checked. Royal Vegas describes a standard review period, Ruby Fortune uses broad timing language and Betway’s Alberta-specific timing remains unverified. None of these summaries is a measured payment result from a feature win.

Read withdrawal processing and account verification for the account questions. Keep a game-result dispute attached to the exact round reference rather than combining it with unrelated later play.

Keep a clear session record

Record paid stakes, complete credits, additional deposits, withdrawals and the closing balance. Intermediate subtotals and feature counters should not be entered as extra money if they already form part of the final result.

In a simple invented session, a $35 starting balance, no additional deposits, no withdrawals and a $14 closing balance represent a $21 loss. The number of feature animations does not change that calculation. Our session ledger can organize those amounts.

Set a time and spending limit independent of a meter or hoped-for trigger. If the session is extending to recover losses, leave the game and use the account’s available controls. The responsible-gambling page provides Alberta support information.

Slot feature questions

Does a wild replace every symbol?

Read the paytable’s substitution rules and exclusions. A wild’s position, duration and additional effect also belong to the individual title.

Do scatters and bonus symbols always mean the same thing?

No universal rule follows from the label. Check whether the symbol pays, triggers a feature or has another role, and identify the required count and positions.

Are free-spin features account promotions?

A feature awarded under a game’s rules is different from a separate account offer or a demo using practice credits. Identify which arrangement the screen is describing.

Should two multiplier symbols be multiplied together?

Only if the game’s rules say so. Some effects add before being applied; others act on different values. Scope and order determine the calculation.

Are all the publisher examples available at the five casinos?

That has not been confirmed. The examples explain mechanics; the cards link to account reviews. Check current availability and configuration in the applicable Alberta lobby.

Does a long or purchased feature guarantee a profit?

No. Compare its final credit with the full amount charged. In the invented example here, a feature costing seventy times a 40-cent base stake costs $28; a $12 final credit leaves a $16 loss. The length or number of animations does not change that accounting or predict another result.

How do I avoid counting feature awards twice?

Use the settled total and check what it already includes. In the hypothetical 50-cent round, a 20-cent base award plus a 60-cent feature award produces an 80-cent credit and a 30-cent gain. Do not add the combined 80 cents to its components again. Running counters and final credits may describe the same money at different stages.

Do hold-and-respin features always start with three attempts?

No. Publisher examples can use different starting allowances, including three or four attempts. Qualifying events may reset a counter, so the eventual total can exceed the initial allowance. Read the exact title’s starting count, reset event and ending condition rather than applying one game’s rules to every feature.
