Hold and Win slots use a feature in which selected symbols stay on the grid while further attempts can add symbols or values. The details vary: the trigger, respin allowance, counter reset, collector behaviour and full-screen award all belong to the individual game. This Alberta guide explains how to read those rules and follow the result.
Hold and Spin, Hold & Win and similar names describe related feature ideas rather than one universal paytable. The publisher examples below show real differences between titles. Use the casino cards to compare accounts separately, then confirm the game and configuration available in the applicable Alberta lobby.
Six parts of a Hold and Win feature
Trigger
Identify which symbols or other conditions start the feature. Check whether they must appear together or in particular positions.
Held symbols
Read what remains on the grid and what is removed. A locked collector can work differently from a locked prize symbol.
Respin counter
Find the starting allowance and the event that resets it. Three attempts is not a rule for every game.
Values
Check whether numbers represent currency, coins or stake multiples, and when they are included in the total.
Additional effects
Read collectors, multipliers, extra rows and mystery symbols in the order defined by the game.
Completion
Establish what ends the sequence, how the final award is calculated and whether filling the grid changes that calculation.
These fields make a useful comparison even when two games use different themes. A familiar coin or pot image does not establish the same feature rules.
Compare the five Alberta casino reviews
The selected brands appear in the AiGC directory checked November 1, 2026. Their payment summaries use operator information checked October 30. These cards link to account reviews; they do not confirm that each casino offers every Hold and Win example discussed here. Visit links may earn a commission; see our affiliate disclosure.
Jackpot City
Game RTPVaries by title
- Interac Online and payment cards listed
- Visa timeframe published separately
- Game help gives each title’s RTP
More about Jackpot City
Jackpot City’s Alberta payment page lists different timeframes for Visa and the method labelled “Interac Online”. That label alone does not establish an Interac e-Transfer payout route. Compare the route available to your own account, including verification and any processing before a payment is released. The figures in this card are published payment information checked on October 30, 2026; they are not measured payout results.
Spin Casino
Game RTPVaries by title
- Interac and Visa payout routes listed
- Deposit-only methods identified
- RTP information is game-specific
More about Spin Casino
Spin’s payment page distinguishes methods that support withdrawals from deposit-only methods. Its two-way section includes Apple Pay, but its specific FAQ names only Interac and Visa; confirm the Apple Pay payout route in the current cashier. That distinction matters more than the number of logos shown. Its published timeframes were checked on October 30, 2026; account checks and the receiving provider can affect completion.
Royal Vegas
Game RTPVaries by title
- Visa and Interac timeframes listed
- 24-hour review period in payment FAQ
- Game help explains individual RTP
More about Royal Vegas
Royal Vegas’s Alberta payment page gives a one-to-three-business-day timeframe for Visa and Interac. Its FAQ also describes a standard 24-hour pending period for review. These are published figures checked October 30, 2026. A listed payment method does not establish its availability, limits or eligibility for every player.
Ruby Fortune
Game RTPVaries by title
- Withdrawal FAQ gives broad timing
- Interac and card methods listed
- RTP varies between game titles
More about Ruby Fortune
Ruby Fortune’s withdrawal FAQ uses the wording “a few business days” for Visa and Interac. We retain that broad wording rather than turn it into an unsupported numerical promise. The information was checked on October 30, 2026; the FAQ also says eCheck can take longer.
Betway
Game RTPCheck game information
- Listed in the AiGC site directory
- Confirm the Alberta account route
- Check cashier terms before paying
More about Betway
Betway appears in the AiGC registered-site directory checked on November 1, 2026. Alberta-specific payment timings were not verified in our October 30 operator check. General Canadian or Ontario help information is not used here as a substitute for Alberta account terms. Confirm the regional site and cashier before depositing.
Confirm the game separately. A casino’s payment methods, brand name or directory entry does not establish a title’s availability, return setting or feature price. Those details need the actual regional game and its information panel.
What happens during the feature?
The central idea is persistence within a feature: certain symbols remain while further attempts take place around them. What those symbols do is the important next question. They might carry values, collect other values, reveal a prize or interact with another effect.
Keep the base game and feature distinct. The ordinary game can use paylines, ways or another win system, while the feature follows its own grid and collection rules. A feature screen with individually spinning positions is not necessarily evaluated like the base reels.
To read an unfamiliar title, first find its feature entry in the help panel. Note the starting conditions, then follow one change at a time: held positions, new qualifying symbols, counter movement and final settlement. This is easier than trying to infer every rule from the animation.
Our slot-features guide provides the wider context, and the Games hub separates feature designs from presentation and prize categories.
Read the respin allowance and reset rule
A starting allowance does not always equal the total number of attempts the sequence will contain. If a qualifying event resets the counter, the feature can continue beyond its initial allowance. You need both the starting number and the reset condition to understand its progress.
Consider an invented feature that begins with three attempts and resets to three whenever a new qualifying symbol lands. An empty attempt reduces the allowance by one. A new qualifying symbol restores it to three. The table illustrates only that assumed rule, not a particular commercial game.
| Stage | Event | Attempts remaining |
|---|---|---|
| Feature starts | Initial allowance | 3 |
| Attempt one | No new qualifying symbol | 2 |
| Attempt two | A new qualifying symbol lands | 3 |
| Attempt three | No new qualifying symbol | 2 |
| Attempt four | No new qualifying symbol | 1 |
| Attempt five | A new qualifying symbol lands | 3 |
The assumed feature would continue until another ending condition applied or the allowance ran out. A different title might reset for a different event or use another starting allowance. More animation does not, by itself, establish another paid stake.
Two publisher examples with different counters
Sky Pearls: Hold and Win
3 Oaks Gaming’s March 7, 2024 announcement describes six Bonus Pearl symbols triggering the feature, with three respins and a reset when at least one new Pearl is acquired. This is a title-specific example of a three-attempt structure.
Dragon Hot Hold and Spin
Pragmatic Play’s June 14, 2021 announcement describes Coin symbols remaining while other symbols are removed. Its feature begins with four attempts; landing additional Coins locks them and resets the count. Filling all positions leads to a separate wheel feature in that description.
These historical publisher descriptions explain why a category guide should not promise three respins across every title. They are not current Alberta lobby checks or a substitute for the rules supplied with the selected version. Neither example’s advertised maximum award or supplier return figure is used here as an Alberta casino claim.
Understand the numbers on held symbols
Read the unit before adding values. A symbol showing “5” could represent five currency units, five coins or five times a defined stake, depending on the rules. The same printed number can therefore produce different amounts in different games.
For a simplified example, assume three held symbols are worth 2×, 3× and 5× the total stake, and the rule simply adds them once. Their sum is 10×. With a 50-cent stake, the resulting feature credit would be $5. If that were the only credit from one paid 50-cent round, its net result would be $4.50.
That calculation deliberately excludes collectors, multipliers, other awards and additional charges. A real feature may include those elements. Check the settled total rather than copying the simplified addition into a different paytable.
Also distinguish the feature subtotal from the complete round result. If the base game has already paid, the interface may show that amount separately before presenting a combined total. Adding the combined total to its own components would count the same money twice. Use the account’s result breakdown to identify the final credit.
Collectors, multipliers and mystery symbols
A collector is a rule to interpret, not just another printed prize. Establish which values it gathers, when it gathers them and whether a later event can collect again. Do not assume every collector operates once or that multiple collectors all use an identical subtotal.
3 Oaks Gaming’s More Magic Apple product page, for a May 2023 release, describes a Collect symbol gathering the values of Bonus and Bonus Gold symbols. It also describes an extra row with Plus, Multiplier and Gold effects. That combination shows why reading only the held-symbol values can leave out part of a feature.
For multipliers, ask what they multiply: one symbol, one position, a collected value or a final total. Then check the order of operations. In a hypothetical calculation, doubling a three-unit symbol and adding a separate four-unit symbol produces ten units; doubling the combined seven-unit total produces fourteen. Similar-looking effects need not mean the same calculation.
A mystery symbol creates another point to read: when does it reveal its value, and does the reveal qualify for a counter reset or other effect? Keep the answer with that title. An unopened symbol should not be recorded as a specific cash prize before the rules resolve it.
Full grids and jackpot labels
Filling a feature grid can have a special outcome, but the result is not universal. Establish which positions count and whether an extra row belongs to the same completion condition. Then read whether the award adds to, replaces or modifies the collected total.
The More Magic Apple description says a full screen doubles the final payout. The Dragon Hot announcement instead describes moving into a wheel feature after all Coin positions are filled. These are different completion rules, despite both games using held symbols.
Likewise, Mini, Minor, Major and Grand names do not establish whether a prize is fixed, stake-based or progressive. Look for the actual award definition and any separate pool rules. A large multiplier is not automatically a growing jackpot.
Our progressive-jackpot guide explains contributions, eligibility and ceilings. Use it when a game actually includes that prize structure, rather than inferring one from the word “jackpot.”
Meters, pots and stored progress
A meter or pot needs its own explanation. Find whether it measures persistent progress, indicates a possible event or works only within the current feature. Its size or animation is insufficient to establish how many further rounds are needed.
Read what happens when the stake changes, the game closes or a different mode is selected. If a game stores something, the rules should identify the relevant scope and conditions. Do not assume progress carries across titles, devices or unrelated casino accounts.
For comparison notes, separate a stated rule from an impression. “The help panel says this meter persists at the selected stake” is specific; “the pot looks ready” is an interpretation of artwork. Only the first type of observation can support a useful account of how that game works.
If the information does not explain a meter’s role, ask about the exact title and mode. Do not keep buying rounds to test an assumption about when it must activate. An incomplete-looking graphic is not a reason to increase an entertainment budget.
Feature entry and the complete price
A feature triggered during ordinary play and a separately priced feature purchase are different entry routes. Confirm whether the next action costs the ordinary stake, an enhanced stake or a larger purchase price. Keep an optional charge separate from the counter resets that occur within an already active sequence.
In an invented example, a feature purchase priced at sixty times a 50-cent base stake costs $30. If its final credit is $12, the net result of that purchase is an $18 loss. The many attempts shown within the feature do not turn that result into several independent profitable purchases.
This is illustrative arithmetic, not a price or expected result for a named title. The actual regional version may have different options, or no purchase option at all. Use the full amount shown before approval and compare it with the session budget.
The how-to-play guide explains the ordinary sequence from checking a stake to reviewing the result. The slot-rules guide covers the information to read before changing modes.
RTP and feature frequency are different measures
RTP describes a theoretical return over extensive play, not the amount a particular session must return. The UK Gambling Commission’s public explanation distinguishes that long-run measure from a player’s short session. We use this as mathematical background, not as Alberta operating rules.
The frequency of entering a feature, the size of its awards and the overall return are separate questions. A frequently triggered feature can pay small amounts; a visually long feature can still finish below its entry cost. Counting how often a feature appears does not reveal its entire prize distribution.
Keep any return figure attached to the exact title and mode. If the help provides separate settings or optional modes, record which information belongs to the selection being compared. Do not replace a missing figure with a familiar number from another release.
Our high-RTP slots guide explains return settings, while the volatility guide addresses the uneven spread of results. Neither a headline percentage nor an attractive feature guarantees that a balance will last.
How Hold and Win fits other slot categories
Hold and Win describes a feature concept. A game can still use a traditional-looking base layout, a modern video presentation or another reel mechanic. Read the base game and feature as separate layers rather than treating the categories as mutually exclusive.
A cascade replaces symbols during a sequence under its own rules. A held-symbol feature preserves selected positions while further attempts take place. One game may contain both ideas, but they should not be assumed to operate identically.
Use our Megaways guide for changing reel layouts and ways arithmetic, or browse video slots for broader presentation choices. The mechanics you want to understand should determine which guide you open next.
Make a shortlist from observable rules
Record the full game name, publisher, trigger, starting attempts, reset event, value unit and completion condition. Add any optional price and the date the rules were read. This produces a more useful comparison than grouping games by coin colours or advertised top awards.
Compare clarity as well as complexity. Can you follow the counter? Can you identify the final credit? Does the help explain what a collector includes? A simpler feature with readable rules may suit your preferences better than several interacting meters and mystery effects.
Leave unknown fields unconfirmed. Our publisher examples explain documented mechanics, but do not establish which deployment a particular Alberta casino currently offers. The five operator reviews above help with the account comparison; the game panel supplies the title-specific details.
Practice mode and mobile reading checks
Practice mode can help you locate the information panel and follow a sample feature without staking cash. Its credits are not withdrawable, and a result does not establish entitlement to a real-money prize. Confirm the cash version’s rules separately.
On a phone, look for a readable respin counter, complete stake, value unit and final result. Open the feature explanation before starting a paid round. Check whether extra rows and effects fit the screen and whether close controls can be used without touching a purchase button.
If the interface cuts off essential rules, leave the game until they can be read clearly. See the free-slots guide for practice-credit distinctions and the browser-versus-app guide for device and account-access checks.
From the final feature credit to a withdrawal
When a feature ends, establish the settled round credit before considering a payment request. A game’s win display, the account balance and a completed bank transfer are separate records. The payout method cannot be inferred from the type of slot feature.
The casino cards retain the differences in the operator information we checked. Jackpot City lists Visa and a method labelled Interac Online; Spin publishes Visa and Interac ranges. Royal Vegas also describes a standard review period. Ruby Fortune gives broad timing language, and Betway’s Alberta-specific timing remains unverified. These are not measured payment results for Hold and Win games.
Read withdrawal processing and account verification for the questions to ask about the account. A feature’s maximum award is not a promise that a payment of that amount reaches a bank immediately.
Record a session without double-counting
Keep stakes, final credits, deposits, withdrawals and the closing balance distinct. A feature’s intermediate subtotal should not be counted again if it is already included in the final round total. Record an optional purchase at its complete cost.
For an illustrative session, a $40 starting balance, no further deposits, no withdrawals and a $17 closing balance represent a $23 loss. The number of respins or feature entries does not change that balance calculation. The session ledger can organize those amounts.
If the game disconnects, note the title, time and round reference and check the account history. Ask support to identify the unsettled or disputed record. Do not make repeated paid rounds to see whether an earlier result reappears.
Set the stopping amount and time before playing. If you are extending a session to recover losses or fill a meter, leave the game and use the available account controls. Our responsible-gambling page provides Alberta support information.
Hold and Win questions
No. The publisher examples above include both three-attempt and four-attempt structures. Read the specific starting allowance and the event that resets it. Read the game’s entry and sequence rules. Attempts inside an already active feature are different from a separately approved purchase. Check the actual debit rather than counting animations as payments. No such conclusion follows from the picture alone. Read the completion and ending rules. Empty spaces do not create a deadline or a reason to extend the session budget. No. A name alone does not establish a contribution pool. Read whether the award is fixed, a stake multiple or governed by a separately described progressive system. No current Alberta catalogue check establishes that. The examples explain publisher-documented mechanics; the cards link to account reviews. Confirm the exact game and configuration in the applicable lobby. No. The publisher examples describe different completion rules. More Magic Apple doubles the final payout for a full screen, while the historical Dragon Hot announcement describes a wheel feature after all Coin positions are filled. Read the selected game’s completion rule, including whether an award is added, replaces another amount or modifies the total. Only if the result breakdown says it is a separate credit that has not already been included. A collector subtotal may form part of the complete round award. Adding a subtotal to a total that already includes it would count the same credit twice. Use the settled round record and ask support to explain any unclear breakdown. No. Feature length, credits and profit are different measures. Deduct the complete entry cost from the complete settled credit. In the invented example above, a feature purchase costs $30 and credits $12, producing an $18 loss regardless of how many respins appear. A long sequence does not establish the game’s overall RTP or recover earlier losses.Does every Hold and Win feature start with three respins?
Are the respins charged separately?
Does a nearly full grid mean the last symbol must arrive?
Are all Grand prizes progressive?
Are the examples confirmed at all five casinos?
Does filling the grid always produce the same award?
Should I add a collector amount to the final total again?
Does a long Hold and Win feature guarantee a profit?
