Megaways slots use a reel-modifier mechanic developed by Big Time Gaming. The number of symbols across the reels can change between spins, changing the available ways to form combinations. For Alberta players, the important checks are the exact title, its paying-symbol rules, complete stake and return setting.
A large ways counter describes the layout, not a guaranteed win or a percentage chance. This guide explains the arithmetic with simplified examples, separates the reel system from additional features and links to five casino reviews. Publisher examples illustrate mechanics; they do not confirm that every game is available in every Alberta lobby.
Six fields to read before comparing games
Reel layout
Identify the main reels, changing symbol positions and any extra row. Read how additional positions join a combination.
Ways counter
Separate the current number from an advertised maximum. Neither figure is a personal chance of winning.
Paytable
Check the minimum matching symbols, direction of payment, wild exceptions and the unit used for awards.
Features
Read reactions, multipliers and free-spin conditions individually. They are not identical across Megaways titles.
Total cost
Identify the ordinary stake and any separately priced mode or entry before approving the next round.
Return setting
Keep the published RTP attached to the exact game and mode. Do not substitute a casino-wide rate.
Start with these fields rather than sorting games by their biggest advertised number. If two versions use the same theme, record their full names so their rules do not become mixed together.
Compare the selected Alberta casino reviews
The five brands below appear in the AiGC directory checked November 1, 2026. Their account summaries use operator information checked October 30. They are casino-review links rather than a verified Megaways catalogue. Visit links may earn a commission; our affiliate disclosure explains the arrangement.
Jackpot City
Game RTPVaries by title
- Interac Online and payment cards listed
- Visa timeframe published separately
- Game help gives each title’s RTP
More about Jackpot City
Jackpot City’s Alberta payment page lists different timeframes for Visa and the method labelled “Interac Online”. That label alone does not establish an Interac e-Transfer payout route. Compare the route available to your own account, including verification and any processing before a payment is released. The figures in this card are published payment information checked on October 30, 2026; they are not measured payout results.
Spin Casino
Game RTPVaries by title
- Interac and Visa payout routes listed
- Deposit-only methods identified
- RTP information is game-specific
More about Spin Casino
Spin’s payment page distinguishes methods that support withdrawals from deposit-only methods. Its two-way section includes Apple Pay, but its specific FAQ names only Interac and Visa; confirm the Apple Pay payout route in the current cashier. That distinction matters more than the number of logos shown. Its published timeframes were checked on October 30, 2026; account checks and the receiving provider can affect completion.
Royal Vegas
Game RTPVaries by title
- Visa and Interac timeframes listed
- 24-hour review period in payment FAQ
- Game help explains individual RTP
More about Royal Vegas
Royal Vegas’s Alberta payment page gives a one-to-three-business-day timeframe for Visa and Interac. Its FAQ also describes a standard 24-hour pending period for review. These are published figures checked October 30, 2026. A listed payment method does not establish its availability, limits or eligibility for every player.
Ruby Fortune
Game RTPVaries by title
- Withdrawal FAQ gives broad timing
- Interac and card methods listed
- RTP varies between game titles
More about Ruby Fortune
Ruby Fortune’s withdrawal FAQ uses the wording “a few business days” for Visa and Interac. We retain that broad wording rather than turn it into an unsupported numerical promise. The information was checked on October 30, 2026; the FAQ also says eCheck can take longer.
Betway
Game RTPCheck game information
- Listed in the AiGC site directory
- Confirm the Alberta account route
- Check cashier terms before paying
More about Betway
Betway appears in the AiGC registered-site directory checked on November 1, 2026. Alberta-specific payment timings were not verified in our October 30 operator check. General Canadian or Ontario help information is not used here as a substitute for Alberta account terms. Confirm the regional site and cashier before depositing.
Account information and game information answer different questions. A payment range does not establish a Megaways title’s availability, RTP or stake. Confirm the exact game in the applicable Alberta lobby before relying on its rules.
What makes a slot Megaways?
Big Time Gaming describes Megaways as a random reel-modifier system that can produce different numbers of symbols across the reels. It has also licensed the mechanic to other developers. That explains why the name can appear on games with different suppliers, themes and feature designs.
The useful distinction is between a shared mechanic and a complete game. The reel system is only one part of the rules. Symbol values, wild behaviour, features, maximum awards and cost options still need to be read for the particular title.
A Megaways label is not another name for every slot with many ways to win. Likewise, a video slot or a game with changing symbols does not establish that it uses this branded mechanic. Use the publisher’s identification and the game help rather than applying the name based on appearance alone.
Our slot-game categories hub places Megaways alongside classic games, video slots and jackpot structures. Those categories can overlap, but they describe different parts of a game.
How the number of ways is calculated
In a simplified six-reel ways model, multiply the effective symbol positions on each reel to count combinations spanning all six. Suppose the reel counts are 3, 4, 2, 5, 3 and 4. Multiplying 3 × 4 × 2 × 5 × 3 × 4 gives 1,440 possible positional combinations.
That total does not say that all 1,440 combinations pay. A paying result still needs the correct symbols, minimum length and direction specified by the game. Extra rows, special symbols and title-specific arrangements can also affect how the effective positions are counted.
If a simplified six-reel layout has seven eligible positions on every reel, 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 equals 117,649. Big Time Gaming’s Vegas Megaways page advertises up to that many ways. “Up to” is a maximum for that example, not a promise about every spin or every title carrying the mechanic.
Do not treat 117,649 as a denominator for calculating a jackpot probability or a feature frequency. Counting possible symbol paths does not provide the probability distribution of the symbols or the value of their awards.
| Example | Calculation | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Changing six-reel layout | 3 × 4 × 2 × 5 × 3 × 4 = 1,440 | Positional combinations across those six reels |
| Seven positions per reel | 7 to the power of 6 = 117,649 | A layout maximum in this simplified model |
| Matching symbol on three reels | 2 × 1 × 3 = 6 | Six matching paths, if the hypothetical paytable qualifies them |
Count matching paths separately from total ways
To understand a particular award, count the relevant matching symbols rather than every position on the screen. Imagine a hypothetical game that pays a chosen symbol from the leftmost reel, with a minimum of three consecutive reels. There are two copies on reel one, one on reel two and three on reel three, with none on reel four.
Under those invented rules, 2 × 1 × 3 gives six matching three-reel paths. The example deliberately stops at three reels: it does not assume that a longer combination would also be paid as every shorter combination. Read the actual paytable’s treatment of length and overlapping wins.
For a separate illustrative payout, suppose each of those six paths pays twice a 50-cent total stake. Each path would pay $1, making the total credit $6. After subtracting the 50-cent round cost, the net result would be $5.50. This assumes that total stake is the paytable unit and that no other charge applies.
A real game may express awards using another unit or apply special rules. Check whether a displayed value refers to total stake, a coin value, a symbol award or the completed sequence. The example is a way to read arithmetic, not a replacement paytable.
Megaways, paylines and clusters compared
With fixed paylines, you read the specified paths through a symbol layout. With a ways model, you read the qualifying symbol combinations across the relevant reels. A cluster game uses its own group or connection conditions. These are different questions even when the games share similar graphics.
A bigger path count does not settle which game has a higher return. You would also need the symbol probabilities, prize values and feature model represented by its published information. Comparing a twenty-line game with a six-reel ways game by the headline count alone leaves those fields out.
The simplest practical comparison is therefore descriptive: can you explain what pays, what a round costs and where the help file defines it? If a win animation is difficult to follow, use the result breakdown or practice mode to identify what the game actually counted. Our slot-rules guide provides a broader checklist.
Reactions and the end of a paid round
A reaction or cascade can replace symbols after a paying result within the sequence following a paid spin. The game help should explain which symbols disappear, where replacements come from and when the sequence finishes. Do not count each animation as a new paid stake unless the rules and account debit show a separate purchase.
Vegas Megaways gives a concrete example: its publisher describes winning symbols being replaced from above on the main reels and from the right on an extra reel. The extra reel adds positions associated with reels two through five. That is a title-specific description, not the required layout of all Megaways releases.
For a hypothetical 50-cent paid spin, imagine reactions crediting 20 cents, 80 cents and then nothing. If the sequence ends with a combined $1 credit and no additional charge, the round’s net result is 50 cents. Record the combined credit and one stake rather than calling each reaction a separate winning session.
The slot-features guide covers the distinction between a paid round and the events that follow it. Always check the specific settlement display when a sequence contains several different effects.
Wilds, multipliers and free-spin modes
Read a wild’s permitted substitutions before using it to explain a result. Check whether it also has a multiplier, whether that multiplier applies to a particular combination and whether multiple multipliers add or multiply. Similar badges on two games do not establish the same calculation.
Pragmatic Play’s August 2020 launch announcement for The Dog House Megaways describes a choice between Sticky Wilds and Raining Wilds free-spin modes after four qualifying bonus symbols. This historical example shows how different feature options can sit beside the reel mechanic. It does not establish the current rules of every version or availability in Alberta.
Keep a feature’s free spins separate from practice credits and account promotions. A feature triggered during a cash game is part of that game’s rules; a demo uses non-cash credits. An account offer can have separate terms. The same phrase appearing on a button or banner does not make these arrangements equivalent.
Before choosing a mode, establish what the choice changes and whether it introduces a separate risk or charge. You do not need to choose the option with the largest advertised potential. Clear rules and an affordable complete cost are more useful comparison fields.
Ordinary stakes and separately priced options
The base stake should remain visible while you read the rules. If the interface offers a feature purchase, enhanced mode or gamble, examine its separate price and effect before approving it. A feature purchase is not simply another ordinary spin at the displayed base price.
For example, an invented feature costing eighty times a 50-cent base stake would cost $40. That can exceed an entire small session budget in one decision. The example is a multiplication exercise, not a feature price for either publisher title discussed here.
Record the full debit when comparing a result. If a hypothetical $40 purchase returns $15, the net result is a $25 loss, even if the return arrives through many animated awards. Do not compare only the number of free spins or celebratory messages.
The regional version may differ from a supplier demonstration. If an option is absent, do not infer that the site is broken or that another version’s price applies. Use the rules and controls actually supplied with the game. Our how-to-play guide explains the sequence from reading the stake to reviewing the settled result.
Return, volatility and the ways counter
RTP is a theoretical return measure, not a prediction of an individual session. Volatility concerns the spread of results. The UK Gambling Commission’s performance-monitoring guidance distinguishes theoretical return from observed return and discusses the variation that different games can produce. We use that mathematical background without presenting UK standards as Alberta account rules.
Neither field can be read directly from the number of ways displayed on one spin. Two games with the same maximum ways can have different prize values, feature structures and return settings. Even within a named game, keep the relevant mode and return wording attached to the comparison.
As a hypothetical definition exercise, a 96% theoretical return applied to $1,000 of turnover corresponds to $960 of theoretical return and a $40 theoretical loss. It does not mean a player who deposits $1,000 will receive $960 back. Turnover is the amount staked, which can include money won and staked again; it is not automatically equal to a deposit.
Our high-RTP slots guide separates return settings from casino-wide claims. The high-volatility category and low-volatility category provide related reading without promising that either type protects a balance.
Megaways does not identify a jackpot structure
The reel mechanic and a jackpot are separate fields. Do not assume a game contains a contribution pool because its title begins with “Mega,” or that a maximum multiplier is a progressive prize. Look for the jackpot’s own rules, entry conditions and pool description.
If a particular release combines the two, read both sets of conditions. Identify any extra entry charge, qualifying mode, starting value or cap before treating a counter as relevant to your chosen round. The game’s ordinary win rules do not answer every jackpot question.
The progressive-jackpot guide explains pool scope, eligibility and the distinction between an award and a withdrawal. Keeping those checks separate avoids comparing a normal feature’s maximum against a growing pool as though they were the same kind of figure.
Build a useful game comparison
Use a short record for each exact title: publisher, regional version, ordinary total stake, ways description, paying-symbol conditions, feature options and return wording. Add the date because a copied image or old review may describe a different release.
Then compare what is known. If one game has clear help and another has an inaccessible paytable, that is a practical difference you can observe. If both advertise the same maximum ways, that does not resolve the missing information. Leave uncertain fields marked unconfirmed rather than filling them with a familiar number from another game.
A useful shortlist should also fit your preferred presentation. You may find a simpler classic slot easier to follow, or prefer a different video-slot layout. The comparison does not require choosing the game with the most symbols, the highest maximum award or the busiest animation.
Practice mode and phone screens
Practice mode is useful for locating the information panel and following a result breakdown. It does not create a cash entitlement, confirm a regional game catalogue or establish the return setting of a later cash session. Keep practice notes attached to the version you viewed.
On a phone, check whether the changing reel positions, full stake and information button remain legible. Open the paytable and make sure you can close it without tapping a paid control. If important wording is clipped, try the supported orientation or leave the game until the rules can be read clearly.
Our free-slots guide covers practice credits, and the mobile guide covers device and account access. A game fitting a screen is only a usability check; it does not establish a mathematical advantage or a faster withdrawal.
Check the casino account separately
After understanding a game, read the account’s deposit, verification and withdrawal conditions. A low ordinary stake does not establish a low cashier minimum, and a game credit is not a completed bank payment. Compare the route available to the particular account.
The five cards above preserve the differences in the operator information we checked: Jackpot City lists Visa and a method labelled Interac Online; Spin publishes Visa and Interac ranges; Royal Vegas describes a standard pending review; Ruby Fortune uses broad timing language. Betway’s Alberta-specific payment timing remains unverified. None of those statements measures the speed of a particular game win.
Use casino banking to compare payment types and withdrawals to understand processing stages. If the game result looks wrong, preserve the round reference and ask the operator to check that record before combining the issue with a later payment request.
Keep the session record simple
Set an amount and a stopping time independent of the ways counter. Include optional charges in the record. A series of reactions can make one round feel longer, but the accounting still needs the actual stakes, credits and balance.
For an invented session, start with $25, add no deposits, withdraw nothing and finish with $9. The net loss is $16. That calculation is more informative than counting how many reactions or feature animations appeared. Use our session ledger to organize those amounts.
Do not extend play because a high-ways round failed to pay or because a feature seems overdue. If the session stops being comfortable, leave the game and use the available account controls. The responsible-gambling page provides Alberta support information.
Megaways questions
No. Paying combinations still need the required symbols and conditions. A layout count does not provide the probability of those symbols or guarantee an award. Big Time Gaming developed and licensed the mechanic, so other developers can create games using it. Check the publisher of the exact title rather than treating the mechanic’s name as the developer credit. No. It is an advertised maximum for the six-reel example discussed here. Read the current counter and the specific game’s rules; do not apply one maximum to the entire category. That has not been confirmed. The casino cards link to operator reviews. Current title availability and configuration need to be established in the applicable Alberta game lobby. Read the exact sequence rules and debit. A reaction following a paid spin can form part of that round, while a separately approved purchase has its own cost. Use the settled history to distinguish them. No. Fixed paylines define particular paths through the reels. A ways model counts qualifying matching-symbol combinations across the relevant reels under its own rules. The changing layout can alter the available ways, but symbols still need to meet the paytable conditions. Do not describe every positional combination as a separate fixed payline. No. The counter describes the layout, while theoretical RTP also depends on symbol probabilities, awards and the feature model. Games with the same maximum ways can have different return settings and result distributions. Read the return information for the exact title, regional version and selected mode rather than converting a ways count into a percentage. Yes. Compare the complete settled credit with the complete entry cost. In the invented example above, an 80-times purchase at a 50-cent base stake costs $40. A $15 credit then produces a $25 net loss. The number of reactions, free spins or win messages does not change that calculation. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a named game’s feature price.Does more ways mean a spin must pay?
